The Catholic Diocese of Wollongong, characterised by rich natural settings, fascinating history, spiritual richness and diverse cultures, exists to serve the people of God in the region south-west of Sydney incorporating the Illawarra, South Coast, Macarthur and Southern highlands. The Diocese extends from Helensburgh in the north to Ulladulla in the south, and from the coast to Moss Vale and north to Campbelltown and Leppington. Under the leadership of Bishop Brian Mascord, and with almost 195,000 Catholics within its geographical region, the Diocese is the eighth largest in Australia in terms of Catholic population and the largest non-Capital city diocese.

The Role

Reporting to the Bishop, the Chief Operations Manager’s role is a key member of the leadership team created to coordinate advice to the Bishop concerning his administrative and pastoral responsibilities of the Diocese. This will involve coordinating the planning and day-to-day operations of the Office of the Bishop and collaborating with heads of diocesan agencies, councils and committees to achieve the best outcomes for mission.

The Chief Operations Manager will work collaboratively with the Diocesan Financial Administrator and the heads of agencies to determine resources required for the maintenance and growth of diocesan offices, including those of Catholic Education, CatholicCare, the Catholic Development Fund and parishes.

In collaboration with the other key diocesan leaders and senior managers, the Chief Operations Manager will establish and implement the pastoral plan for the Diocese and drive its implementation.

Key Requirements

The role will ideally suit someone with extensive experience at a senior level, preferably in the not-for-profit sector, in managing the operational and administrative aspects of an organisation, including management of people, resources, compliance and strategic planning. You will have commercial acumen, a strong understanding of the Church’s structure, be a practising Catholic and have a personal commitment to the mission and values of the Catholic Church. You will be able to translate pastoral, strategic and business plans into action, and have a sound understanding of the legal and regulatory environment governing commercial and not-for-profit organisations.

You will have excellent knowledge of corporate governance, risk management and resource allocation. You will demonstrate strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills, be a strong communicator and have a proven track record in leading and managing change.
