St Mary’s Cathedral is the spiritual home of Sydney’s Catholic community and is the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney. Not only is St Mary’s Cathedral a great legacy from the past, but it is also a vital part of the present spiritual and cultural life of the city of Sydney and the nation. St Mary’s Cathedral Precinct (Precinct) is located in Sydney’s CBD and incorporates the Cathedral, Cathedral House, the Crypt, surrounding grounds and associated operations.
St Mary’s Cathedral is currently seeking a candidate to fill the full-time role of Assistant Sacristan at St Mary’s Cathedral.
About the role
The Assistant Sacristan plays an important support role in the life and worship of the Cathedral. Working under the direction of the Sacristan, and in collaboration with clergy and liturgical ministers, this position helps ensure the Cathedral, Sanctuary, Crypt, and Sacristy are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, order, and reverence.
This role involves hands-on preparation for Masses and other liturgical celebrations, including the care of vestments, altar linens, sacred vessels, and liturgical books. The Assistant Sacristan also contributes to the daily presentation and upkeep of sacred spaces and assists with Cathedral and Cathedral House activities as required.
This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week) worked on a rotating roster, reflecting the operational and liturgical needs of the Cathedral.
About You
You are a diligent and respectful individual who takes pride in careful, well-ordered work and understands the importance of reverence in a sacred environment. Ideally, you bring experience in cleaning and caring for liturgical items and have a sound understanding of Catholic liturgy and practice.
You are comfortable working as part of a small, dedicated team and interacting with clergy, staff, volunteers, and liturgical ministers. Your attention to detail, discretion, and professionalism ensure that all aspects of the Cathedral’s liturgical life are supported smoothly and respectfully.
Most importantly, you demonstrate a genuine commitment to the ethos and values of the Catholic Church and approach your work with reliability, initiative, and a strong sense of service.
